Eight is the last size at which most of the shops you already know have a full range of boots, in almost every style. Marks and Spencer’s own boots are a good marker: they are there at 8 and gone at 9, where its list is all other brands. Shoe Zone’s choice narrows just as sharply, from names such as Hush Puppies, Rieker and Skechers at 8 to Lilley and Softlites at 9. If you take an 8 you can still shop by style rather than by what happens to exist, in ankle, Chelsea, lace-up and knee-high boots, with wide feet and wide calves both catered for.

Knee-highs are still easy to find at 8. Shoe Zone, Marks and Spencer, Long Tall Sally, Yours, Evans, Simply Be, JD Williams, ASOS, Dune London and Pavers (as knee-length boots) all list them, and Dr. Martens has its Kasey, Rejena, Buzz Hi and Anistone. Shops label calves in different ways. DuoBoots gives eight calf sizes in centimetres, Simply Be and JD Williams use Curvy and Super Curvy, and Yours has an XL calf range. ASOS and Pavers have wide calf pages. Yours’ chart puts calf figures on its fittings: 418 mm for E and 458 mm for EEE at UK 8.

How to measure your feet for size 8 boots

Long Tall Sally, Yours Clothing and Marks and Spencer give 262 mm for a women’s UK 8, Clarks 263 mm, Shoe Zone 26.8 cm and Dr. Martens 27 cm, so the same label covers nearly a centimetre.

1. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, in the socks you plan to wear with the boots.
2. Mark the tip of your longest toe, keeping the pen upright.
3. Measure from the wall to the mark in millimetres on both feet, and use the longer one.
4. For a wide fit, wrap a soft tape round the joints at the base of your toes and compare it with the figures below.

Width fittings at size 8

Yours Clothing’s chart gives a joint girth of 252 mm for E and 264 mm for EEE, with instep figures of 248 mm and 254 mm. Marks and Spencer’s gives 256 mm for Standard (D) and 265 mm for Wide (E), and Long Tall Sally’s one figure is 246 mm. Dr. Martens gives a foot width instead, 9.5 cm, and has no width options of its own. Beyond EEE, DB Wider Fit Shoes lists 6E and 6E-8E, and Cosyfeet about 6E. Hotter and Simply Be name Extra Wide as EEE. Clarks has D and E widths, but its EE was down to very few styles at 8 on 30 October.
